SUMMARY OF THE THESIS

This industrial PhD-project was made in cooperation between AAU and Orbicon|wsp. The project focuses on quantification of hydraulic effects of discharge from stormwater detention ponds and determining the most environmental beneficial way of discharging, thus including the actual capacity and resilience of the stream when issuing a discharge permit in oppose to using standard numbers. Anja has been cooperating with the municipalities and water utility companies from Vejle, Aarhus and Randers in order to include their needs to improve the water quality in the streams, decrease the need of space for detention ponds and considering the streams and the detentions ponds as òne water system. Through the project Anja has investigated:

  • How much water is actually discharges from existing detention ponds and how the discharge can be monitored.
  • How discharges from stormwater detention ponds affects the sediment transport in the stream and determine whether it is possible to predict the resulting sediment transport based on existing theoretical models.

A number of control strategies all focussing on minimising the negative effects of discharge by discharging based on the available capacity in the stream.
