The AAU Innovation unit AAU PhD has invited its first members to a newly established network for PhD alumni. The ambition is that alumni contribute to a number of strategic initiatives over the coming period. The launch of the alumni network and its activities support the Knowledge for the World 2022–2026 goal of inspiring PhD students to a career outside academia. At the same time, international, national and local AAU surveys indicate that there is a need for initiatives that support the well-being of PhD students. This will also be one of the focus areas of the mentoring scheme.

Former PhD students who become part of the alumni network can also sign up to mentor current PhD students. They will also have the opportunity to be an ambassador for AAU. AAU PhD makes sure to equip mentors to support relevant activities in the best possible way.

AN IMPORTANT ROLE

PhD alumni who become mentors for current PhD students will have a major role in a number of key initiatives regarding PhD students' well-being and career after completing their PhD studies.

Head of the Doctoral School at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Henrik Halkier says:

- The new PhD network offers great opportunities for PhD alumni, PhD students and AAU as a whole. The members of the alumni network get to share important experience about PhD study and career options. The PhD students receive mentoring at eye level. At the same time, AAU gets to stay connected with our PhD alumni for the benefit and enjoyment of all concerned.

PhD students who begin their studies after 1.9.22 are presented with the opportunity to be assigned a mentor.

ENSURING A GOOD MATCH

AAU PhD is responsible for matching the PhD student and the mentor. The idea is that with their experience – both in life as a PhD student and their work experience – the mentors will inspire the PhD students in their future career choices. The mentoring scheme will also have a positive impact on the well-being of the PhD students.

Members of the alumni network will have the opportunity to participate in targeted events with both AAU staff and external speakers. In addition, the alumni themselves help define the areas they are interested in receiving news about.
